The Burdekin River is the main water source for the Charters Towers region. Water from the weir is pumped to the blue tank on top of Towers Hill.
There are two recreation areas near the Burdekin Weir.
Burdekin Weir Park:
- Views of the Weir Wall
- Children's playground
- Picnic tables (some shaded)
- BBQs
- Toilets
- Birdwatching - there are often cormorants, pelicans, ducks and darters often spotted.
- Fishing - walk down to the water or put your boat in at the boat ramp nearby (see below).
Dave Chapman Park (boat ram & ski area)
Accessed by turning left before entering the Burdekin Weir Park and travelling about 1km along the dirt road. Facilities include:
- Picnic tables
- BBQs
- Camp of the New Gum Tree
- Boat ramp, providing access to the Weir Recreation and Ski Park, which opened in October 2019. This is a great spot for sailing, jetskiing, water skiing (in the designated ski area) and fishing.
Fish species in the area include Sooty Grunter, Cat Fish, Sleepy Cod, Barramundi and Small-mouth Grunter.
Please note, no camping is allowed in this area, but you could stay at the nearby Charters Towers Tourist Park either in cabins or in your own caravan or tent.
